SCHOOL THREAT

A JUVENILE IS CHARGED AFTER A SOCIAL MEDIA THREAT WITH A SHOOTING TARGETING ELIZABETHTON HIGH SCHOOL.  AN ALERT WAS SENT MONDAY NIGHT SAYING THAT THERE WOULD BE AN INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE TODAY AND THAT CLASSES AT ALL ELIZABETHTON CITY SCHOOLS WOULD BE ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE.  ELIZABETHTON POLICE SAY A BREAK IN THE CASE CAME THANKS TO A QUICK REPORTING OF THE THREAT AND TIPS.  THE NAME OF THE JUVENILE AND SPECIFIC CHARGES HAVEN’T BEEN RELEASED.  THERE’LL BE INCREASED SECURITY TODAY OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION.

BODY FOUND IN RIVER

AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY AFTER A BODY WAS FOUND IN THE NOLICHUCKY RIVER.  TWO FISHERMEN SAW THE BODY SUNDAY IN THE RIVER IN TUSCULUM.  POLICE SAY THE BODY WAS FOUND ABOUT A MILE UPSTREAM FROM THE KINSER BRIDGE.  A DIVE TEAM WITH THE SULLIVAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECOVERED THE BODY MONDAY.  THE IDENTITY OF THE BODY IS BEING WITHHELD PENDING NOTIFICATION OF FAMILY.

SCHOOL DEAL

OFFICIALS WITH THE TOWN OF JONESBOROUGH, WASHINGTON COUNTY AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL SIGN AN AGREEMENT TODAY—THAT’LL FINALIZE THE DEAL FOR A NEW K-8 SCHOOL IN JONESBOROUGH.  THE CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF THE DOCUMENT COMES AFTER COUNTY COMMISSIONERS LAST MONTH APPROVED A LEASE-TO-OWN DEAL—WITH THE TOWN OF JONESBOROUGH BUILDING THE SCHOOL.  THIS MORNING’S SIGNING WILL TAKE PLACE AT 10:00 AT THE WASHINGTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN DOWNTOWN JONESBOROUGH.

TRIO PLEADS IN JAIL DEATH

3 OF 6 MEN CHARGED IN A DECEMBER 2018 JAIL BEATING DEATH HAVE PLEADED GUILTY TO CHARGES IN THE INCIDENT.  THE SIX WERE CHARGED IN THE DEATH OF JOSEPH LOCKNER OF GRAY, WHO WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE DECEMBER 17TH.  HE WAS TAKEN TO THE JOHNSON CITY MEDICAL CENTER, WHERE HE DIED 3 DAYS LATER.  JOHN WOODARD PLEADED GUILTY TO RECKLESS HOMICIDE AND WAS SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS IN PRISON.  AUTHORITIES SAY WOODARD WAS THE ONE WHO ACTUALLY HIT LOCKNER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD.  JONATHAN PEARSON PLEADED TO AGGRAVATED ASSAULT RESULTING IN DEATH AND WAS SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS.  STEVE NECESSARY PLEADED TO CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT AGGRAVATED ASSAULT RESULTING IN DEATH.  HE WAS SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS.

ETSU ENROLLMENT

SOME CHALLENGES ARE ON THE HORIZON FOR EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY—IN TERMS OF NUMBERS.  ENROLLMENT IS A CONCERN.  CHIEF PLANNING OFFICER DR. MIKE HOFF NOTES THAT THE NUMBERS OF FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN ARE DOWN, “SO, IT’S GOING TO TAKE FOUR OR FIVE YEARS FOR A LOT OF THIS MIX TO WORK OUT.  FOUR YEARS OF EDUCATION AT ETSU–THAT’S REALLY WHAT WE CARE ABOUT.  WE CARE ABOUT THAT START AT ETSU , THAT FINISH AT ETSU.”    THE TENNESSEE PROMISE IS ALSO HAVING AN IMPACT—AS SOME STUDENTS ARE OPTING TO BEGIN POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
