VEHICLE IN RIVER, DRIVER OK

KINGSPORT POLICE SAY A DRIVER ESCAPED INJURY AFTER A VEHICLE RAN OFF RIVERPORT ROAD AND INTO THE RIVER.  POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE 400 BLOCK OF RIVERPORT TUESDAY EVENING.  THE NISSAN ALTIMA REMAINS IN THE RIVER WHILE A TOWING COMPANY FIGURES OUT HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE IT.  POLICE ASK YOU NOT TO CALL 9-1-1 TO REPORT IT AS THEY ARE ALREADY AWARE.

BALLAD-RESUME ELECTIVE

BALLAD HEALTH WILL RESUME SOME ELECTIVE PROCEDURES ON MONDAY.  TODAY, THE HEALTH CARE PROVIDER SAID THOSE SURGERIES THAT CAN BE DONE ON AN OUTPATIENT BASIS WILL BE DONE FIRST.  THE RE-START COMES AS THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 PATIENTS IN HOSPITALS HAS DROPPED BY OVER 200 OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS—FREEING UP MORE SPACE.

COVID-19—SOUTHWEST VA/VIRGINIA

THERE ARE 10 NEW DEATHS AND 130 NEW COVID-19 CASES IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA.  THERE WERE 3 DEATHS EACH IN BUCHANAN AND TAZEWELL COUNTIES WITH 1 EACH IN DICKENSON, SMYTH, WASHINGTON AND WISE COUNTIES.   WASHINGTON COUNTY HAS THE MOST NEW CASES WITH 31 WHILE BUCHANAN AND SMYTH COUNTIES HAVE 28 EACH.  IN VIRGINIA, THERE’S AN INCREASE OF 5-THOUSAND 227 CASES AND 54 DEATHS FROM TUESDAY’S REPORT.

COVID-19—NORTHEAST TN/STATE

THERE ARE 2-THOUSAND 200 ACTIVE COVID-19 CASES IN THE 8 COUNTY NORTHEAST TENNESSEE REGION.  SULLIVAN COUNTY HAS THE MOST WITH 623 AND WASHINGTON COUNTY HAS 546.  GREENE COUNTY IS NEXT WITH 333 ACTIVE CASES.  THERE ARE CURRENTLY 40-THOUSAND 711 ACTIVE CASES IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE.  CASE NUMBERS WILL BE UPDATED LATER TODAY FROM THE TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.

COVID-19—BALLAD

BALLAD HEALTH REPORTS 157 PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19.  THAT’S DOWN OVER 200 FROM THE PEAK OF 361 PATIENTS ON JANUARY 5TH.  OF THOSE HOSPITALIZED, 29 ARE IN INTENSIVE CARE AND 21 ARE ON VENTILATORS.  BALLAD HAS ALSO ADMINISTERED 25-THOUSAND 767 FIRST DOSES AND 13-THOUSAND 796 SECOND DOSES OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE.  OVER THE PAST 7 DAYS, BALLAD’S POSITIVE TEST RATE FOR THE VIRUS IS 19.1-PERCENT AND 138 DEATHS.        

HAWKINS VACCINE

RESIDENTS OF HAWKINS COUNTY WHO ARE AGES 75 AND OLDER CAN BEGIN RECEIVING THE COVID-19 VACCINATIONS.   HEALTH DEPARTMENTS IN ROGERSVILLE AND CHURCH HILL HAVE THE VACCINE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO MEET THE AGE REQUIREMENTS.  YOU CAN REGISTER ON-LINE OR CALL 979-4689 FOR ASSISTANCE.  THE VACCINE REQUIRES 2 DOSES, BUT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WILL CONTACT THOSE WHO’VE ALREADY RECEIVED THE FIRST DOSE.  THERE’S NO NEED TO REGISTER FOR THE SECOND DOSE.

WASH CO SCHOOLS—BACK IN PERSON

WASHINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING ON MONDAY FEBRUARY 1ST.  THERE’S SOME CONCERN ABOUT PENDING LEGISLATION THAT WOULD REQUIRE SCHOOLS TO BE IN SESSION AT LEAST 70 DAYS THIS SCHOOL YEAR OR RISK LOSING STATE FUNDING.   THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN ON A VIRTUAL SCHEDULE SINCE LATE NOVEMBER.  STUDENTS WHO OPTED FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR DON’T HAVE TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON CLASSES UNLESS THEY WANT TO.

HEUPEL—NEW UT COACH

TENNESSEE HAS HIRED JOSH HEUPEL AS THE UNIVERSITY’S NEXT FOOTBALL COACH.  HEUEPL COMES TO KNOXVILLE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA  AND WILL BE THE 27TH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORY.  HEUPEL HAD A 28-8 RECORD AT UCF AND LED THE KNIGHTS TO A 12-0 REGULAR SEASON IN 2018 AND AN APPEARANCE IN THE FIESTA BOWL.  HEUPEL SERVED AS MISSOURI’S OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN 2017 AND THE TIGERS WERE RANKED FIRST IN THE SEC FOR TOTAL OFFENSE AND EIGHTH OVERALL IN THE NATION.  HEUPUEL IS THE FIRST MAJOR HIRE FOR NEW ATHLETICS DIRECTOR DANNY WHITE.  HEUPEL REPLACES JEREMY PRUITT, WHO WAS FIRED LAST WEEK AMID ALLEGATIONS OF NCAA RULES VIOLATIONS.

BURGLARY

A JOHNSON CITY MAN WILL BE ARRAIGNED TODAY AFTER ALLEGEDLY TRYING TO BREAK INTO A STORE.  TUESDAY NIGHT, POLICE RESPONDED TO T’S MARKET AT 607 NORTH ROAN AS A MAN WAS TRYING TO BREAK OUT THE FRONT DOOR TO THE BUSINESS WITH A HAMMER.  21-YEAR-OLD TAYLOR PACK WAS FOUND A BLOCK AWAY NEAR ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH.  HE TRIED TO RUN, BUT WAS ARRESTED AFTER A BRIEF FOOT CHASE.  POLICE FOUND HIM WITH EVIDENCE LINKING HIM TO THE ATTEMPTED BURGLARY.  PACK IS CHARGED WITH BURGLARY, VANDALISM AND EVADING ARREST.
