CHILD ABUSE

TWO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN SULLIVAN COUNTY FOR ALLEGEDLY ABUSING THEIR 2-MONTH-OLD CHILD.  THE SULLIVAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVED A REFERRAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN’S SERVICES.  INVESTIGATORS SAY CORY RAY GIBSON SAID HE USED SUCH FORCE WITH THE CHILD THAT IT CAUSED BRUISING ABOUT THE HEAD AND DURING ANOTHER INCIDENT, HE HANDLED THE INFANT BY THE NECK.  ALSO, LORISSA DAWN GIBSON DIDN’T REPORT THE ABUSE TO AUTHORITIES.  BOTH ARE CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED CHILD ABUSE AND ARE IN THE SULLIVAN COUNTY JAIL.

SPRINKLER CONTAINS FIRE

KINGSPORT FIRE CREWS WERE CALLED THURSDAY NIGHT TO A FIRE AT ANITA’S SNACK FOODS AT TRI-CITIES CROSSING.  THE CALL CAME IN AS A COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM BUT WAS UPGRADED TO A STRUCTURE FIRE.  EMPLOYEES USED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND THE FIRE TRIGGERED A SPRINKLER HEAD WHICH CONTAINED THE FLAMES.  KINGSPORT FIREFIGHTERS EXTINGUISHED HOT SPOTS AND VENTILATED HEAVY SMOKE IN THE BUILDING.  THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION. 

HARSHBARGER—BORDER

FIRST DISTRICT CONGRESSWOMAN DIANA HARSHBARGER RECENTLY VISITED THE US-MEXICO BORDER AND SAID THE SITUATION IS A NATIONAL SECURITY, HUMANITARIAN AND PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS AND IS WORSE THAN IS BEING REPORTED.  SHE SAID PEOPLE ON THE GROUND SAY THAT LAWS ON THE BOOKS NEED TO BE ENFORCED, INCLUDING FINISHING CONSTRUCTION OF THE BORDER WALL.

MISSING TEEN

KINGSPORT POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A MISSING TEEN.  15-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL D’SHAUN BRICE WAS REPORTED MISSING APRIL 14.  HE WAS LAST SEEN ON FOOT IN THE 700 BLOCK OF NORTH EASTMAN ROAD.  INVESTIGATORS DON’T SUSPECT FOUL PLAY, BUT BECAUSE OF HIS AGE, EVERY EFFORT IS BEING MADE TO FIND HIM.  HE’S A BLACK MALE, 6-FEET TALL, 135 POUNDS WITH BROWN EYES.  HE COULD POSSIBLY BE WEARING A BLACK NIKE SHIRT, RED SWEAT PANTS AND RED AND WHITE ATHLETIC SHOES.

JC—RED LIGHT CAMERAS

JOHNSON CITY COMMISSIONERS HAVE APPROVED KEEPING THE CITY’S RED LIGHT CAMERAS FOR ANOTHER 6 MONTHS.  THE CITY’S AGREEMENT WITH REDFLEX TRAFFIC SYSTEMS HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH OCTOBER 1ST.  THE CITY ENTERED INTO THE AGREEMENT WITH REDFLEX IN 2009.  THERE ARE CURRENTLY 6 RED LIGHT CAMERAS IN JOHNSON CITY.

JC COMMISSION—REMOTE WORKERS

JOHNSON CITY COMMISSIONERS HAVE APPROVED $100-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HELP ATTRACT REMOTE WORKERS.  IT’S PART OF A PROGRAM THAT WOULD OFFER INCENTIVES FOR PEOPLE TO RE-LOCATE. TO BE ELIGIBLE, APPLICANTS MUST RE-LOCATE TO JOHNSON CITY OR WASHINGTON COUNTY WITHIN 6 MONTHS, BE A FULL-TIME REMOTE WORKER AND COMMIT TO LIVE IN THE AREA FOR ONE YEAR.

SULLIVAN JAIL—NOT ON OLD SCHOOL PROPERTY

BUILDING A NEW SULLIVAN COUNTY JAIL ON THE OLD BLOUNTVILLE SCHOOLS PROPERTY IS DEAD.  THE IDEA HAS BEEN SCRAPPED BECAUSE IT LACKS SUPPORT AMONG COMMISSIONERS.   THE SULLIVAN COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM WILL STOP USING THE PROPERTY FOR SCHOOLS NEXT MONTH.  COUNTY COMMISSIONER DWIGHT KING SAID HE’D STILL LIKE TO LOOK AT A TRADE:  THE SCHOOL PROPERTY FOR AN ACCESS ROAD TO THE NEW WEST RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL.

ACCUSED KILLER TO GET NEW HEARING

A MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING THREE WOMEN IN WASHINGTON COUNTY VIRGINIA IN 2019 WILL GET A NEW PRELIMINARY HEARING.  JAMES MICHAEL WRIGHT WILL ALSO HAVE A NEW LAWYER FOR HIS HEARING ON AUGUST 19TH.  WRIGHT REPORTEDLY CONFESSED TO KILLING ATHINA HOPSON AND TWO OTHER WOMEN.  HOPSON’S REMAINS WERE POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED EARLIER THIS YEAR.
